British mounted police officers secure the area of the Winston Churchill monument near Parliament Square in Central London, on Saturday, July 11, 2020 - prior to the arrival of a group of demonstrators marching from the US Embassy in East London, towards Westminster. This is the seventh weekend of protests, which are organised by the Black Lives Matter.
Monuments have become major focuses of contention in demonstrations against racism and police violence during May-June this year. Far-right groups threatened to deface Nelson Mandela’s and Mahatma Gandhi’s monuments, whilst anti-racist protestors accused Churchill of racism and threatened to deface his monument.
Anger against systemic levels of institutional racism have raged through the city, and worldwide; sparked by the death of George Floyd who died on May 25 after he was restrained by Minneapolis police in the United States. (VXP Photo/ Vudi Xhymshiti)
